A Beginner's Guide to Lingerie Shopping

Posted by Nicole Slaughter Graham on

Maybe, this is your first time considering lingerie. Maybe, your first experience wasn’t the best, but you’re ready to try again. It's an exciting thought wearing something gorgeous and feeling really confident in it. And that’s what lingerie is about: you feeling confident in your own skin and in the pieces you choose.

Trekking down to the store can be exhilarating! You’ve done some online research and you’ve chosen a few styles that you think will work for you, but when you actually enter the store, the situation can become overwhelming. First and foremost, take a deep breath. You’re not alone! Between the ads, the pressure to be a certain body type, and the hype, lingerie shopping can be downright exhausting. But not to worry. We have some points to consider to ease the process and help you find that piece that really makes you feel great.

This is about you, and only you

Sometimes, we tend to think we’re putting on something sexy for someone else, and that might be partially true. When it comes down to it though, wearing lingerie is for you. You choose the pieces that make you feel empowered. You wear it because you want to, and you get to find what you like, rather than what you think someone else might like. The beauty of lingerie is that if you feel confident and beautiful in what you’re wearing, then you are indeed, beautiful and confident.

This will be key to remember during your shopping experience. If what you try on doesn’t make you feel amazing, you don’t have to buy it.

Colors, prints and patterns can be your friends

You have the option to mix it up! Typically, ads show lingerie in solids, and black is especially popular. If black doesn’t suit your personality or your style, you don’t have to feel like it’s the only option. If you never wear nudes and don’t think they flatter your skin tone, skip them.

Today, lingerie comes in all kinds of colors, patterns, and prints. You can choose cute polka dots or a really elegant floral. If you’re feeling adventurous and want something off the beaten path, you can choose pieces with bold patterns or bright colors.

You don't have to stick to what's popular

Many women go into their first lingerie shopping experience thinking they have to choose from the following: garters belts, padded push-up bras and thongs. After all, these items are what we see in all the ads, right?

These pieces are options, absolutely, and they look great on many women! However, these aren’t the only options. Remember that lingerie is all about what makes you feel confident. If you don’t want to show off that derriere in a thong, you don’t have to, but what’s more is that there are other options that are just as sexy. The possibilities are literally endless. Here are some other styles to consider:

Rompers

Not just for a summer picnic or a day trip through downtown, rompers are a great lingerie option. Fashioned in stylish prints, florals, lace and solid colors, rompers come in all kinds of colors, cuts, and styles. You can choose an all-lace, low-cut piece or opt for a cheeky style in a silky, soft material. The beauty of a romper is its versatility, and an array of cuts make this option great for any body shape.

Teddies and Bodysuits

These flattering one-pieces are a great way to show off curves and feel sexy. Teddies are one-piece outfits that combine the style of a pair of panties and a cami. They can be form-fitting, but not necessarily so. A bodysuit is generally form fitting and can be panty-style or thong style.

You can choose a deep V style to accentuate the chest and show some of the midsection. If you’d rather accentuate your hips and lower curves, you can choose one that has lacy finishes to bring attention to specific areas. Bodysuits and teddies come in sheer materials and in full coverage and they’re available in just about any color you can imagine. These pieces are versatile and beautiful, and there’s a style for every body type.

Pajamas

Sleepwear has come a long way, and pajamas are no exception. Gone are the days when a knit, knee-length, full-coverage piece covered in florals was the only option.

Two-piece, silky sets are beautiful, comfortable, and sexy. You can also opt for something as simple as a sports bra and a pair of boyshorts. A lacy cami with a pair of lace-adorned panties can be really flattering. The thing is, if it makes you feel good, then it works, and that’s all that matters.

Trial and error is key

Just like finding that perfect pair of jeans, your first experience with lingerie might be a mix of trial and error. Know that this is completely normal. It might take several styles (and a couple hours in the dressing room) to figure out exactly what makes you feel best. Finding the right combination of what flatters your body and what makes you feel unstoppable is a process.

Do you have any tips or tricks to make lingerie shopping a success? Would you rather let someone else pick out pieces for you? If so, one of our expert stylists would be happy to assist you. We’d be happy to help you get started today.
